I walked off the street and stood in the back of the church.  I had never been in a Bible believing and Bible teaching church.  I was there out of curiosity and searching for something.  Tears began to roll down my face as the worship came and the music played and the songs were song.

Clueless, But I Knew I Was Supposed to Be There

I didn’t know why I was there, but I returned week after week on Wednesday nights to hear the music, listen to the singing, and cry. I had no idea what was going on but God was drawing me, beginning to heal me.  I could not explain what was going on or why I needed to be there, I just knew I was supposed to be there.

From Unchurched to Saved

The first Sunday morning I came to the church was after about 6-7 of these Wednesday nights. I heard the gospel for the first time in my life and gave my life to Jesus and never looked back. I was forgiven and radically saved and changed that day.  It wasn’t long before I knew I had to share what I had found and others were looking for.

From Saved to Ministry

The Great Commission is about making disciples and true disciples do ministry – they do what Jesus did!  When I wasn’t at work, I lived at the church if the doors were open and I started sharing Christ, serving people and watching God do amazing things!

Mission 10:20 Youth Leader and Teen Leader Training

Fast forward 15 years later, I have been doing my best to help people come to Jesus but more importantly, to DO ministry where they live, work and play each and every day.  The people who need Jesus are outside the church walls and Mission 10:20 is about training leaders to do ministry and to train others, especially youth to minister to the broken outside the church walls.  My friend Richie has the same heart and helped many live the same story I just shared about me.

Richie Righteous – Leading Workshop – From Unchurched to Ministers

When you have a passion from God, He connects you with like minded people.  On Saturday, December 8th, Richie Righteous will be leading this workshop in Elmhurst Queens for Youth Pastors and Leaders.  Most know Richie as a rapper, but he has spent years being a Youth Pastor and Associate Pastor at his local church.  I asked him to lead this workshop because his lifestyle is one where he leads young men and women to Jesus and trains them to do ministry and reach their generation.  I love when Richie raps, but my greatest resepect for him is from how he loves and disciples young people from the streets to become ministers.  Please come learn from this man of God who lives what he will be teaching.

Stay tuned for more posts on our great line up of teachers. We want to strengthen Youth Leaders and Teens to reach a generation!  We want to build a strong youth ministry in every church in NY City!

Our world is full of people. PEOPLE who are often full of PAIN. Followers of Christ are filled with POWER! But why don’t Christ followers reach down to PULL people up?  Why was it the Good Samaritan that helped while the religious people walked by?

Skating By the Broken

When I first moved to NY, I was very moved by the homeless people who were hurting and were in need.  I often shared or bought food or gave money, but it became overwhelming.  The constant need dulled my heart for people.  About a year and a half later, I got to the point where I would roller blade by the homeless and even thought it funny to weave through the bodies on the ground (slightly pre-salvation!).  Even in my unsaved state, I knew something had gone wrong with my heart.

Walking By the Beaten and Broken

You know, because of being able to call 911 and all involved with EMS and police, we don’t walk by bleeding people laying on the ground.  With social services, we don’t often see crippled beggars sitting by the Gate called Beautiful.  But still our world is full of emotionally and spiritually beaten and broken people.

Response to Sandy Has Been Amazing – Imagine if this type of love was NORMAL!?!?

Thank God for all those who have and continued to respond to those who are hurting from Hurricane Sandy.  Can you imagine the power of the church if we lived like this each day.  If we actually SAW the people, felt their PAIN, shared the POWER of Christ, and reached down to PULL them out of their situation.  They would live a BEAUTIFUL life and not just sit by a Gate called Beautiful. Let’s train a generation to live like this!

Mission 10:20 Youth Leader and Teen Conference

On Saturday, December 8th, a group of 6 Youth Pastors and Ministry Leaders will be training and equipping the next generation of leaders and teens to minister to this youth generation.  Its not enough to know about problems but we must see the PEOPLE.  we must be willing to help them in their PAIN. We must know, and understand that we may not have silver or gold but do have the POWER of Jesus! But we must be willing to reach down and PULL them up also.

As I was driving home from a friend’s house last night with a rather full stomach, I came to a red light in front of the local Target store.  It was about 8:45 pm and people were making hard left turns in front of me, speeding to get into the parking lot.  It was like watching a feeding frenzy on Animal Planet. Now, I like Target, but I just can’t imagine that they have anything I want bad enough to possibly crash my car, almost run over an old lady and then risk physically fighting someone in the hopes of buying some discount product. Maybe its just me.

Black Friday passion had hit on 8:45 Thursday night. Me, being constantly preoccupied with figuring out how to get God’s will done here on earth, the scene amazed me. Could you imagine if every follower of Christ was as hungry to get the gospel and power of Jesus Christ into the lives of people as the carnivorous shoppers almost running me off the road were to get some cheap version of the flat screen tv that they really wanted?

So as you continue to digest your Thanksgiving leftovers, here are a few thoughts I have to help you have a passion for the things of God that would out do the passions of the Black Friday fanatics worshipping at the altar of the discount register.

1) Continue to Give Thanks Daily – I love Thanksgiving Day, I love pilgrims, I love turkey, stuffing, sweet potatos (with the little marshmallows) etc., I love the United States of America but most importantly, I love the God that makes all of that possible each and every day!

give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.              1 Thess. 5:18 NIV

2) Love God More than the Stuff – I like a good flat screen tv just as much as anybody. We may not be that good at teaching people to read or create jobs these days, but we are great at producing some overly materialistic folks.  If followers of Christ were as passionate about pursuing God as those rabid shoppers pursuing cheap stuff, our planet would be a better place.

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all our mind and with all your strength.  Mark 12:30 NIV

Who may ascend the hill of the LORD? Who may stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false. Psalm 24:3-4 NIV

3) Go After Souls with More Passion than the Bargain Shoppers for the Stuff

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 NIV

Let me end with this, yes, buy things on sale. And yes, enjoy the blessings that you have.  But I ask you for one thing, which I am confidant that is also God’s will. In your life, in your passions, just like those rabid shoppers shopping, when it comes to the things of God, go for it! The most important things to have passion for, is first your relationship with Jesus, and then in doing His will. One day that discount flat screen will be driven away in the back of a garbage truck, but that soul you helped win to Jesus will be in heaven forever. Give everything you have, but give the best you have for eternal purposes.

Yes, have passion, but have the most Black Friday Passion for Jesus.

God has created each of us to do certain things.  One of the key things that God has created me to do is to train leaders who equip people so they can do God’s work (see 2 Timothy 2:2).  I don’t take this lightly, often feel unworthy to do so, but constantly try to work with others to achieve this goal.  In a world that would consume us with being busy, we must set priorities of what we do, which is driven by why we do what we do.  Here are seven reasons why I believe we should spend out time, energy and resources training Youth Leaders in NY City.

  1. Jesus Trained People – as followers of Christ, Jesus consistently spent time with people and equipping them to go and do what He did.  Many church leaders spend all of their time trying to feed and care for the sheep already in the church and not enough time training additional shepherds to reach and care for new sheep.  We should be spending time doing both.  The Bible records both ongoing relationships and impactful encounters where people where both changed and equipped for ministry. (Mark 6:7-12, Matthew 28:18-20)
  1. Followers of Jesus Went to Cities – time and time again in the New Testament, the leaders of the church went to the cities such asJerusalem,Rome,Corinth,Ephesus andGalatia because when you impact major cities, you can change world culture.
  1. NY City is the Capitol of the World! – in many ways, NY City may be the most influential city on the planet.  It is the home of Wall Street, Broadway, MTV, the NY Yankees – lol, but seriously, New York City impacts culture through finances, entertainment, fashion, art and in many other ways that is felt around the world.
  1. NY City is the Home of People from all Over the Planet – the Borough of Queens by itself is said to be the home of over 1000 nationalities and just by itself is the most culturally diverse city on the entire planet.  That doesn’t even includeManhattan, Long Island, Staten Island or theBronx!  If we could significantly impact justQueens, we can potentially impact people from 1000 countries, that’s literally half the planet who are represented in some way!
  1. Youth Leaders Help Teens Navigate Life – Teens are transitioning into adulthood and are at the point in their lives when they have the least amount of mature knowledge, wisdom and experience while simultaneously being challenged with the greatest temptations and obstacles.  They are continually presented with difficult choices and opportunities that can lead to either greatness or destruction.  Along with the Holy Spirit and parents, youth leaders are often the GPS system on this very confusing and challenging road.
  1. Youth Leaders are often Undertrained and Isolated – youth leaders are asked to deal with the population of people who are probably in the most volatile period of their lives and are being faced daily with difficult decisions and choices.  This happens all while their hormones are raging and they are constantly being bombarded by society with persuasive messages to go in the wrong direction.  Youth Leaders need to be equipped to both minister to teens and to also build a team of people in their local church to help teens.
  1. There’s At Least 1 Million Teens Who Need Jesus in NY City!  Statistics range from 1 million teens in NY City to 2.5 million teens in the Greater NY Metro Region.  These teens are in our neighborhoods and cities and need to hear the gospel clearly communicated in a way they can understand and they deserve to have a local church and youth ministry where they can be discipled to navigate this world!

So we have answered the call.  A team of 6 Youth Pastors and Ministry Leaders from the NY Metro Region will be connecting with and training leaders at the Mission 10:20 Youth Pastor, Leader and Teen training.  The theme is Equipping the Next Generation of Leaders and Teens.  All Youth Pastors, Youth Leaders and Teen Leaders are invited to be equipped, and to connect with other leaders and teens to go and impact this youth generation!

Together, if we can impact NY City, we can have an impact on our region, nation and the world.  It will happen one teen at a time when the committed youth leaders helps a teen in their local church, on the street or somewhere at the mall.  It is grassroots and behind the scenes where the ministry takes place.  Please join me in prayer for the Youth Leaders of NY City who work tirelessly day in and day out to make a difference!

Why All the Pain and Chaos?

When we look around the world and listen to the news.  There is pain and brokeness everywhere!  On individual levels, local and national scenes, there are so many things that are just not right.  When we see the violence, the greed, the hopelessness and depression of so many, we have to ask questions.  The simplest answer to why there is so much pain and chaos in our world is because so many people are living, and our man made systems and behaviors are outside of God’s order and will in some way.  The absence of God’s love, power and purposes creates this pain and disorder in our lives and in our societies.

INFUSION – How Individual People Can Change Their Local Atmosphere

Infusion is the process by which a substance is injected into something in order to increase its effectiveness or to bring change.  When we look at society, it is evident that we are in desperate need of an injection of Jesus Christ into our culture.  It is painfully clear that many individuals are living outside of God’s love and purposes.  INFUSION pg. 1

Receive. Grow. Give it away…

This simple statment captures how everyone can live in God’s power, purpose and plans in greater ways.  God has so much to give us, but we have to receive it.  Many receive, but it ends there.  Whatever we receive, we must grow in.  When we are constantly receiving and growing, we will have an overflow and can give away what God has given us.  Peace, joy, comfort, power, guidance – it is available to us and we can share it with others.

Spreading the INFUSION Message – You Can Live It!

This message of Receive. Grow. Give it away… has inspired many.  It can be grasped and used if someone is 15 or 55.  It has been captured in my book INFUSION and shared with many at churches and conferences.  It helps make God and spiritual growth easier to understand and experience.

INFUSION at the Regeneration Student Conference

We are honored that the INFUSION message has helped to inspire the theme for the Regeneration Student Conference -    “INFUSION” (Injecting Christ into a godless culture)  Even though the INFUSION book was written mainly for adults, I love to share the message with youth also.  God’s Word is for all ages!  I will be sharing this INFUSION message on Friday, September 7th at the Regeneration Student Conference.

I encourage you today to spend some time with the Lord.  He has something for you, but you must receive it.  What we receive is like a seed and our heart is the soil.  Let that seed blossom and grow daily.  Protect it, water it and watch what God does.  As you continue to grow, God will use you to INFUSE His power, purpose and plans into other’s lives and you can make the world a better place by helping one person at a time!
